I recently attended a presentation at the Nesconset Library regarding the Smithtown Master Plan. I want to thank the Smithtown League of Women Voters for sponsoring this presentation and also the guest speaker for the evening; Assistant Planning Director, David Flynn.
Mr. Flynn highlighted the factors that go into the development of a town's Master Plan and how Smithtown's Master Plan in particular is focusing on Smithtown's future growth. A draft was recently submitted to the town board by the planning board. The plan not only includes Smithtown's Main Street, but also, Kings Park (namely the state park land once used for the state hospital), St. James, and Nesconset.
Questions came up about possible uses for the land in Kings Park and many were interested in the prospect of a facility equivalent to the lab in Colds Spring Harbor. Other issues of interest were the growth of Smithtown's Main Street (Rte. 25/25A) and if the possibility of sewers would come into play. Mr. Flynn also emphasized the importance of public feedback when it comes to determining the direction of a Master Plan for a town. The Planning Board encourages people to attend meetings and help to decide the outcome.
