    Chester is beautiful in the fall! The Downtown shopping area on Main Street is always having special events at different times of the year. This week-end October 10, 13 & 14th, it's the 35th anniversary of their Harvest Celebration!

    Some of the events include pumpkin painting, face painting, clown performance, a pet costume contest....and a visit by NBC's 'Produce Pete'. Finish your fun filled day by stopping at Taylor's Ice Cream. I suggest the pumpkin spice ice cream with chocolate sprinkles!     For the majority of the “newcomers”, Chester is the picturesque town at the intersection of Routes 206 and 513 in the rolling hills of Morris County. The quaint Main Street stores and the abundance of open land within the Township is most likely what draws people to this town. But Chester is so much more and boasts of an interesting history. Nestled in the foothills of Southwest Morris County, Chester Borough's 1.45-square mile community sits at the crossroads of two major roadways, Route 24 and Route 206. Chester Township encircles the Borough's bustling town center with almost 30 square miles of primarily residential property. The two sister municipalities share a rich historical heritage, which is still evident in the many remaining older structures, both residential and commercial.

    The quiet village life and quaint country charm still emanate from the streets. With more than 8,000 residents, Chester Township continues to emphasize the preservation of open space, with more than 30 percent of its land designated as such. Most of the town's undeveloped land falls under large-lot zoning in an attempt to protect it from encroaching urbanization.

    The cozy town of Chester, home to a population under 2,000, is a haven of parks and a nature lover's hidden gem. There are nine parks exclusively considered part of Chester Township: the Allen/Knight Tracts, Black River Park, Chubb Park, Tiger Brooks Park, Highland Ridge Park, the Evans Family Forest Preserve, the MacGregor Preserve, the Parker Road Preserve, and the Tannersbrook Preserve. All of these feature some kind of walking/running trails in peaceful, bucolic surroundings. These are in addition to the several county and state parks that are at least partially within Chester.

    The busiest and biggest park is Chubb Park, an 85 acre facility right off route 24 and closer to route 206. It features tennis courts, multi-purpose athletic fields (turf for soccer, football, etc.), several baseball fields, a playground, a picnic area, and an area for special events. There's even a Veteran's Memorial and a 9/11 Memorial in the park, a testament to this community's patriotism.

    Speaking of that, several parks in Chester (including Chubb) have access to the "Patriot's Path" hiking trail. This trail connects with park and trail systems all over Morris County. There are paths for walking/running, biking, and even equestrian riding! If you love the outdoors and the idea of taking a nature walk among historical sites and calm lakes, the Chester area is a great option.

    Great news folks! Our local high schools have just been recognized for their achievements and the fabulous programs they offer. West Morris Mendham's state ranking just rose nearly 40 spots to #4 in the most current list of the Top High Schools in New Jersey. West Morris Central made the same climb to #11 in the state. The state is, finally, now recognizing the additional programs our students have available right here in our school system. The International Baccalaureate (IB) program is now being recognized in the tallying of attributes that gives a high school their rankings. Our school system offers both a AP and IB program which sets it apart from the rest. Good news for homeowners, this may cause the value of our homes to rise as new residents choose this particular area to settle in, as it is tops in the state.

    The Chester Farmers' Market is sponsored by The Rotary Club of Chester-Long Valley, as a service to the local farmers, the local community and businesses. The Farmer's Market takes place on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. beginning in June through November. The vendors bring their homemade, home grown delicacies to the Main Street and Perry location. Local farmers bring their current harvested seasonal crops. Specialties such as gourmet pickles, bread and home cooked foods are offered for sale. New vendors are added as they are approved by the Chester Health Department as well as the Rotary Club. Come on out and join in the country atmosphere,sample a few goodies and take some home later to enjoy later. While you are here, visit the array of fun shops and boutiques along with our restaurants. This surely will be a fun experience!

    The Morris County 4-H Fair is an annual event at Chubb Park in Chester. This event
    showcases the accomplishment of the 4-H groups in Morris County. Admission is free and
    there is a petting zoo, amusement rides, a pet show, and a lot of other events taking
    place from July 17th to July 20th.

    The Morris County Parks Commission is celebrating its 10th anniversary of hand-shearing sheep this Saturday, May 10. Come meet the baby lambs and see sheep shearing as it was done in the past. It is amazing to watch the skill of these professional shearers and the trust between animal and human.

    There will also be hands on activities for visitors such as skirting and washing the fleece, carding, spinning and weaving the yarn.

    The event will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Cooper Gristmill which is located at 66 Route 513 in Chester Township. The cost is $3 for adults, $2 for seniors (65 & over), $1 for children (age 4-16) and children under 4 are admitted free.

    100 North Rd., Chester, NJ is the location of Chester's great community garden. Beautifully designed and executed for residents of Chester Twp. and Chester Borough, and adjoining towns if there's room, it contains 120 plots for rent in the middle of a bucolic sunny field, well fenced against the deer and groundhogs that usually wreck havoc on our gardening efforts!

    I was so pleased when several years ago Chester started a Community Garden, located in the Highlands Ridge Park off North Rd. Open to both Borough and Township residents, and beyond if space allows, it has been a resounding success. Beautifully designed and thoroughly fenced against deer, etc., it offers 120 plots, a gazebo for shade, a shed for the lawnmowers, and water spigots every 20 feet or so among the sunny plots.

    For a reasonable fee, you, too, can have a great sunny space to garden, surrounded by knowledgeable like-minded people. The garden is run on organic principles and offers free mulch, manure and topsoil as needed. We've had several parties there, a Tomato Contest sponsored by the Chester Garden Club, and just a great time getting to know our neighbors.

    This Restaurant and Inn was built by Zephaniah Drake in 1810. It was used as a hotel and tavern. It as to become a very popular stage coach stop between New York and Pennsylvania run by Mr. Drake.
    It also served as a prep school in 1854 called the Chester Institute owned by William Rankin. In 1862 it reopened as a tavern and hotel and has had many owners still running it as a restaurant and hotel to this day. The restaurant recently was renovated and the interior is just exquisite. The Inn's restoration is almost completed and will be opened in the near future.

    The preserved Publick House is located on Main Street in the center of Chester and is quite the gathering place for residents and visitors alike.

    For those who have never taken a stroll down the nostalgic streets of Chester, now is the time. The leaves have all turned and there is that "crispness" in the air. The streets of Chester are lined with harvest decorations and the holidays will soon be approaching. Everything from the sweet shoppes to the ice cream parlors, there are so many shops to explore. Quaint little coffee shops and cafes and great restaurants, too. When you are done strolling down yesteryear, don't forget that just a short drive away is the Streets of Chester mall on Route 206 with a fine selection of more contemporary shopping. Chubb Park is just a few minutes drive. And, oh, the farms too! There are several fantastic, family owned farms in Chester as well. You definitely must check out Chester!

    Chester is a small town with upscale living and a wonderful sense of community! If you seek a hometown with a "town center", historic feel, walkability, a feel of being out in the country, but still lots of activity, visit Chester. On the crossroads of Routes 24 and 206, with proximity to the Peapack/Gladstone Train Station, ease to Rts 287 and 78, next to Mendham, a short drive to Morristown, many Chester residents commute to NYC.

    One of the things I find most appealing about Chester is its variety of parks and recreation options. Within Chester and within two miles over Chester's borders we have national parks, state parks, county parks and local (township and borough parks).

    We offer beautiful spaces. For hiking, try Highlands Ridge, MacGregor Preserve, Chubb Park, Tiger Brook, and The Evans Preserve, to name a few. Beautiful gardens and homes in Willowwood and Bamboo Brook are set amidst parkland. Fun play areas and athletic fields are in Highlands Ridge, Grove Street Park and Chubb Park. Nearby state and national parks include Hacklebarney, Lewis Morris and Jockey Hollow

    Chester boasts its own very excellent theater. Located on the corner of Maple and Grove Street, it's in an interesting historical building. They present a variety of plays every year, typically musicals, comedies, drama or the like. The small intimate theater, almost in the round, offers a great evening of entertainment at a very reasonable price. They've been active since 1958 and since 1965 in that location. You can volunteer, act, take classes or simply come to watch! See you there!

    Hacklebarney Farm Cider Mill is located at 104 State Park Road in Chester, NJ. Come and enjoy the best apple cider, apple cider donuts, pumpkin donuts and other baked treats. All baking is done on the farm and you can watch as they make the apple cider. The farm also has pick your own apples and pumpkins. There is a corn maze too. The farm is open Thursday threw Sunday 10 am to 5 pm. The donuts are to die for!

    Visiting Riamede Farm is a MUST every fall for me and my family. We meet up with other family friends & pick our fill of our favorite apples. Then we go home and have an apple pie bake off. Those that don't bake... judge. It has become a fall tradition at our house. Just make sure you call ahead of time to see which varieties are ready. My son loves the Winesap & King David apples the best. He will cry if those are not available. Its tons of fun and hey...don't I love it when my kids are begging me to eat more apples!

    There’s nothing like heading into Chester, NJ on a weekend afternoon to visit the boutiques, antique shops and have lunch at one of the sidewalk cafés. Yes, the small town atmosphere still exists here in Chester. As you walk along Main Street you will be greeted by friendly shop owners when you stroll into their stores. They are proud of their wares and are happy to chat or assist you with your purchases. There are shops for all ages and of course a few good restaurants of assorted cuisine as well. And, if the kids start getting a little antsy and you are looking for some home grown fun, just head down Main Street to Alsteads Farm. The children can visit the animals, they have an outstanding corn maze (of which I still have not mastered) and plenty of other weekly events to experience. Sometimes it is the simple things in life that bring us the most joy! Leave the video games home and take a stroll down memory lane!
